USA Today’s New Seven Wonders (The List)

March 31st, 2009

As mentioned in my previous post, USA Today, a popular newspaper created their own list of the new seven wonders of the world. They added one more though, the eighth wonder chosen by the viewers.

Here is the list:

1. Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet, China

2. Old City of Jerusalem in Jerusalem, Israel

3. Polar ice caps in Polar regions

4. Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument in Hawaii, United States

5. Internet

6. Maya ruins in Yucatán Peninsula, México

7. Great Migration of Serengeti and Masai Mara in Tanzania and Kenya

8. Grand Canyon (viewer-chosen eighth wonder) in Arizona, United States

Some sites are familiar, some are not, but one thing for sure, every site here is worth visiting. A wonder of the world. For the rest of the articles this week, I will discussing each of these sites. It’s history, photo, description, how it began, how to go there, where is it exactly located and more. Things that a tourist will look for when going there. It is going to be an interesting week! And hopefully will able to help you in your next journey. So watch out for it! And don’t forget to have fun too! (*wink*)

USA Today’s New Seven Wonders (Overview)

March 31st, 2009

The USA Today has it’s own version of the New Seven Wonders. According to Wikipedia, in November 2006 the American national newspaper USA Today in conjunction with the American television show Good Morning America revealed a list of New Seven Wonders as chosen by six judges. The wonders were announced one per day over a week on Good Morning America. An eighth wonder was chosen on November 24 from viewer feedback.

Here’s an overview on USA Today from Wikipedia.

USA TODAY is a national American daily newspaper published by the Gannett Company. It was founded by Allen ‘Al’ Neuharth. The paper has the widest circulation of any newspaper in the United States (averaging over 2.25 million copies every weekday), and among English-language broadsheets, it comes second worldwide, behind only the 2.6 million daily paid copies of The Times of India. USA Today is distributed in all fifty states, Canada, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Guam.

I realized that USA today is a pretty big company. I’m sure that a lot of people follows this newspaper. No wonder they created their own list of the new seven wonders. Watch out for more here in the next few days!

The History of San Miguel de Allende

March 31st, 2009

San Miguel de Allende is a very interesting city that’s why I made a couple of research on it’s history. I realized that there are a lot of readings about this place. Here are some history from one website.

San Miguel de Allende was founded in 1542 by a Franciscan missionary from Spain, Fray Juan de San Miguel. His first settlement, among the chichimecas was on the other side of where the railroad tracks are now, in the small pueblo of San Miguel Viejo.

But water was scarce there, and when his dogs found water where the chorro is now, the settlement moved to its current location and was called San Miguel el Grande.

As a mule train stop, when silver and gold were being mined to the north and shipped to Mexico City, San Miguel became a center of commerce for the surrounding area and the city grew quickly. Vast haciendas were established to grow cattle and provide whatever the marketplace called for—machetes and knives, harnesses and stirrups, woven goods, wool and leather.

And then afterwards many wonderful things followed such as nice San Miguel Hotels, restaurants, huge mansions and beautiful churches. Thanks to mining of gold and silver, it became an era of wealth and splendor for three centuries in San Miguel.
