Four Countries Combatting Swine Flu (Canada/China/India/Indonesia)

April 30th, 2009

Based on the report from CNN.com last April 28, 2009, countries all over the world are trying to combat the outbreak of swine flu.

In CANADA, there are now six mild cases. What they do as their measure? Issued a travel health notice, saying its public health agency was “tracking clusters of severe respiratory illness with deaths in Mexico.

In CHINA, as of now there are no cases of swine flu. Their measures? They banned pork imports from Mexico, California, Kansas and Texas in the United States.

In INDIA, as of now no cases of swine flue. Their measures? Indian health officials advised citizens to postpone their non-essential travel to the swine flu-hit regions. They also stepped up surveillance at ports and airports. And the states asked to review their preparedness.

In INDONESIA, no cases of swine flu. What they do as their measure? They increased surveillance. They test the temperatures of travelers flying into the country.

Even if these countries do not have cases of swine flu yet, they make it a point that they are prepared. And what they do is prevent. It is easier to prevent the flu than to fight against it. I hope that you are also doing your part in being aware on how to combat or fight against the outbreak by having a good hygiene.

How to Prevent Swine Flu while Traveling?

April 30th, 2009

These are the common questions of the travelers nowadays. I have to admit, if I had plans of going out of the country, I would be having second thought is I will re-schedule it until the swine flu has died down. But what will those people on business trips do since they don’t have so much of a choice? Good thing there are lots of information already available online that helps people not get swine flu.

Here are some of the tips I have gathered.

  • Improve the ventilation (if you are in a plane) at your seat by turning on the overhead
air vent to low and positioning the airflow to be slightly in front of
your face. This may create enough air turbulence to push a viral
particle from landing on your face and mucous membranes. (according to Mark Gendreau, MD, is senior staff physician and vice chairman of
emergency medicine at Lahey Clinic, Burlington, Massachusetts)
  • Use a surgical mask when you are traveling to areas that have reported cases of swine flu and bring an additional one to give to anyone near you who forgot one or appears to be sick and is coughing or sneezing.
  • Anti-bacterial hand gels or alcohol would come in handy. Use it after using the bathroom.
  • Always keep your hands away from your face
  • Avoid crowded public areas if you can

On Swine Flu and Flying

April 30th, 2009

Since everyone is on alert because of swine flu pandemic, I’m sure that flying on an enclosed space like a plane, will be a concern for you. Of course you would worry, what if one of the passengers in the plane has the virus. Is it going to spread?

Mark Gendreau, MD, senior staff physician and vice chairman of emergency medicine at Lahey Clinic, Burlington, Massachusetts, explained in CNN.com that…

In a nutshell, the risk of getting an infection while you’re in an enclosed space such as an airplane depends upon three factors: The infectiousness of the contagious person spreading the illness; the degree of your exposure (how close you are to the contagious person and for how long); and the ventilation of the space or passenger cabin.

We really have no control over the infectiousness of our fellow passengers, and usually, you really don’t have much of a choice about your seating partners. So the exposure is pure chance.

So, does this mean that we need to re-schedule all our travels and flights until the swine flu dies down? Don’t worry. Here’s what Dr. Gendreau advised…

Most respiratory viral infectious diseases — like influenza and the common cold — transmit via droplets contaminated with the offending microorganism when the infectious person coughs or sneezes.

These droplets are propelled no farther than 3 feet and can land on an inanimate object — such as a seat, overhead bin or seat tray — or on your body. This is why hand hygiene is so critical and is the single most significant thing you can do to protect yourself and your family when you are traveling or out in public.

I guess the bottomline here is that we just have to take extra care and always on the lookout for common symptoms.

Getting Debt Relief In Illinois

April 30th, 2009

It is known fact that worrying about debt causes high levels of stress; a situation increasing numbers of people in the Western world are finding themselves in. The best way to beat the debt stress is to learn how to manage your finances more thoroughly. First off, your illinois debt relief will start the moment you take your situation seriously; otherwise it can never be rectified.

The most important thing to remember is not to panic and stay focused as this way your decisions will be clearer and more positive. Although hard, it will pay you in the long term to continue to make your monthly repayments on any loans and find other ways to save money.

Create a budget for yourself by adding up all your income, payments and expenses which will help you check where your money is being spent plus your budget will highlight all the small, unnecessary expenses that can be eliminated. Cut the credit card purchases by introducing a habit of paying in cash as this will restrict your expenditure to the amount of cash you are carrying.

A good way to help with your illinois debt relief situation is to put spare amounts of money aside and although it may take a while to accumulate, this type of fund can help pay off small debts. Also, putting a limit on unnecessary expenses such as entertainment, until the time you have paid off your creditors, any excess money in the repayment fund can be used for this purpose.

Although the option of refinancing your mortgage may sound a great way to lower your monthly outgoings and pay off your debts, this is not always the best way so biting the bullet and paying of your immediate debts can be more beneficial. Although this is a great way to raise spare cash in the short term you may not think that way a few years later so consider if this is really right for you.

Whilst not an ideal solution to paying a credit card installment, it is possible to withdraw cash to do this providing it is not looked upon as a long term plan. If your debt is so high that you have to file for bankruptcy because a re-mortgage option hasn’t worked then you should consult a bankruptcy attorney for the best advice.

There are occasions to avoid bankruptcy, individuals use the money that has been accumulating in their individual retirement accounts but it has serious consequences for your future financial security. Using your IRA as a illinois debt relief solution is fraught with problems and your future tax deferred returns will be lost if you choose this route so just take control of your spending and reduce your debts.

What is Swine Flu?

April 30th, 2009

I’m sure you’ve heard about swine flu and how it has been a scare to most of the people all over the world. What is it anyway? I have read from Wikipedia that swine flu refers to influenza caused by any strain of the influenza virus endemic in pigs (swine). Strains endemic in swine are called swine influenza virus or SIV.

News are everywhere about this and here’s a little update from CNN.

The number of confirmed swine flu cases worldwide has risen to 154, with six additional cases reported in Spain, the World Health Organization said Thursday.

The WHO is troubled because in one of the 10 cases in Spain the virus was transmitted from person-to-person within the community.

The other nine infected people had returned from Mexico, where the crisis is most severe, according to WHO spokesman Dick Thompson.

If Spain sees more such cases of community transmission, the world body may have to elevate its pandemic alert to its highest level. Phase 6 is the pandemic phase and is characterized by a community-level outbreak in another country in a different WHO region.

If you are traveler I’m sure that you will be concerned. Knowing that this virus is almost everywhere. So for the rest of the week, expect a lot of articles about swine flu and hopefully some tips on how to avoid it.

April 30th, 2009

This video explains unofficially what the contribution limits are for 200i9 for IRA and 401K accounts…whether self-directed or not.
