Top 10 Most Interesting Food in the World (4/10)

May 30th, 2009

The fourth most famous and interesting food that you might want to try is called Ijka corn found in Colombia. Here are details from The Sydney Morning Herald.

Few of us live corn like the Arhuaca people of northern Columbia. Calling themselves Ijka, which means ‘men of corn’, the Arhuaca eat corn in all their meals and also use corn’s four colors (yellow, coffee, black, and white) to outline their view of the universe, and as the basis of their social structure. This holy food is used in rituals and as a therapeutic tool.

This is one of my favorites! I love corn so much that I want to try it myself. If I would eat corn in all of my meals, it would be heavenly for me! I like the corn if it’s white or yellow. I like it as a side dish or as the main meal. This is also good with steak, chicken, or pork chops. There are a lot of recipes available that you might want to try. As for me, I would definitely look for this famous and interesting corn in case I would visit Columbia. Probably in five to ten years? Who knows!

Top 10 Most Interesting Food in the World (3/10)

May 30th, 2009

The third most interesting food in the world is called Mite cheese found in Sachsenanhalt, Germany. Here are details from The Sydney Morning Herald.

Mite cheese is like something out of the Dark Ages. Prepared with an ancient technique from the Middle Ages that has only recently been revived, mite cheese may be one of the most unusual foods you’ll ever eat. In Sachsen-Anhalt, raw low-fat cheese (quark) is placed in wooden boxes full of mites that crawl all over the cheese. After three months the mite’s excrement turns the cheese reddish-brown, and at one year it turns the cheese black, at which point it is consumed.

Here are more details from Wikipedia.

The Mite Cheese is a German specialty cheese. Today it is produced exclusively in the village of Würchwitz, in the state of Saxony-Anhalt; historically it was known in the Saxony-Anhalt/Thuringia border region of Zeitz and Altenburg districts. The tradition, which dates back to the Middle Ages, was nearly lost by 1970, with only the elderly Liesbeth Brauer knowing the technique. Local science teacher Helmut Pöschel was taught the proper way to make Milbenkäse and together with his associate Christian Schmelzer managed to revitalize the tradition. A memorial was later erected at Würchwitz to celebrate the renaissance of Milbenkäse production. The rear side of the memorial is hollow and is regularly stocked with small bits of Milbenkäse for passersby and tourists to try.

All About Scuba Diving

May 30th, 2009

I love the beach so much but honestly I can’t picture myself doing scuba diving. First of all scuba diving equipment are expensive and I live far away from the beach. So it would take hours to travel to the nearest beach. But I heard a lot of good things about this sport. Check out what I found from ScubaDivingBuzz.com.

With a stunning display of colors, schools of exotic coral fish shy to the camera, ducked into the depths of the ocean. The ocean changed its colors from gorgeous green to shades of dark gray as you went deeper and deeper into the heart where lie many a shipwreck, strange fish, and nitrogen breathing plants and organisms, and an eerie silence, which however mysterious is soothing for the mind, body, and soul.

Sounds a pretty relaxing treat for me. This website gives you all the information that you need about scuba diving. In that website I found out that there are actually different types of scuba diving. These are:Commercial diving, Technical diving, Naval diving, Military diving, Police diving, Recreational diving, Professional diving, Rescue and recovery diving, and Scientific diving. I hope one day I would be able to try it at least once in my lifetime.

The second most interesting food in the world is called Hachiyagaki persimmons in Japan. Here are details from The Sydney Morning Herald.

These priceless honey-sweet persimmons were once given as gifts to Japanese royalty. But with the tilling-under of fields for silk production, the fruit trees disappeared until the 1940s when a 20-year-old farmer launched an extensive search and located a single remaining ‘mother tree.’ A few elderly villagers remembered the traditional ways of preparing these persimmons and there are now 87 producers in the Gifu prefecture.

Here is a little bit of history from SlowFoodFoundation.com.

Hachiyagaki is a variety of persimmon native to the village of Hachiyamachi, Minokamo, Gifu prefecture. Hachiyamachi, near the town of Minokamo, is located between Sekigahara, Guzyo, Hida and Ena: in Hachiyamachi itself winters are particularly milde, the suitable climate for the drying persimmon. Hachiyagaki is a variety is currently grown in about 15 prefectures. It is very highly regarded and suitable for drying (the fresh fruit has a high tannic content and an astringent taste, but when it has been dried it becomes sweet and tasty).

Putting up an Internet Cafe

May 30th, 2009

Lately, I’ve been thinking about putting up an internet cafe. Since I saw the need of the computers especially for kids in school. And also I noticed that these kids love to play online games.

Good thing that there are so many shops that offer computer parts now. There are actually shops that are available online. Since we are too busy with work and family we wanted to possibly purchase computer parts online now. There are sites that offer computer parts and will give you information that you need. They will provide you with the complete specifications of each product, making sure that you are getting the right computer part for your computer. The best thing to do here is to read about stuff on how to build a computer so that at least we get to build the computers that we will using in the cafe. With this we will be familiarized with the parts that we will be using. The advantage of building our own computer is that we would know what to do if a problem comes up. We can also choose which computer part we opt to buy. In our case we would definitely buy branded stuff.

Top 10 Most Interesting Food in the World (1/10)

May 30th, 2009

There are a lot of interesting food when we travel. So I’m posting the top 10 this week and next to give you information and who knows you might be able to try it when you are in a specific country.

The first interesting food originated in Egypt. It is called Siwa Oasis Dates. Here’s a little bit of details from The Sydney Morning Herald.

In 332 BC, Alexander the Great followed birds across the scalding sands of northwestern Egypt to find the legendary Siwa Oasis. His goal was a private consultation with the oracle of the Sun God, Amon-Ra, who would anoint him the next Egyptian pharaoh, but there can be no doubt that he sampled the dates and olives of Siwa, among the finest in the world. Today each crop is still cultivated in private gardens tended in the traditional way.

Here’s a little bit of overview on Siwa Oasis in Egypt from Wikipedia.

Siwa Oasis an oasis in Egypt, located between the Qattara Depression and the Egyptian Sand Sea in the Libyan Desert, nearly 50 km (30 mi) east of the Libyan border, and 560 km (348 mil) from Cairo.[2][3][4] About 80 km (50 miles) in length and 20 km (12 mi) wide,[2] Siwa Oasis is one of Egypt’s isolated settlements, with 23,000 people, mostly ethnic Berbers[2] who speak a distinct language of the Berber family known as taSiwit. Its fame lies primarily in its ancient role as the home to an oracle of Amon, the ruins of which are a popular tourist attraction and gave the oasis its name.

Homes & Condos for Rent

May 30th, 2009

There are a lot of homes and condos for rent in San Miguel de Allende. I think this is the practical way if you are planning to stay a long time. I know that it would be nice to stay in one of those San Miguel Hotels but if you plan to stay for a month or more then you should think about staying in a home or condo. As I have read in SanMiguelDeAllendeMexico.com, San Miguel is magical, historical, cultural, beautiful, tranquil. The weather is perfect year around. There is always something to do, something to see. It deserves its reputation as a top tourist destination. It will captivate you. So I guess a week or two is definitely not enough if you plan to really explore the place.

I remember before when we travel, I would always make sure that we are at least 5 days in every place that we go to. And it is still not enough! But since we needed to go home to go back to work, we didn’t have a choice. I just hope that when the opportunity arises and that I will be able to visit San Miguel, I hope that it is at least two weeks to a month.
